One thing I believe God has given me the idea to do, is to be open with my kids about money. Maybe even to the extent of working up a budget, letting them see what we spend money on and when the bills are due, and what and when my paychecks are. It would give me accountability as well as give them a clear picture of just how this thing called "money" works.
My son just called me to brainstorm about how I could get my photography business going. Talk about timing! He's driving back to Houston after spending Thanksgiving at home. We came up with some great ideas and I'm excited about getting started!

The books by Dave Ramsey are also very helpful! He has a web site, popular radio show, and tv show. There is so much information available on the web these days too. If you click on the blog link for Remodeling This Life on my sidebar, you will find that she has a whole host of blog links for money management articles.
ReplyDeleteSchool curriculums are sadly lacking in teaching about personal money management, so most of us learn as we go (and make mistakes, LOL). By all means, teach your children about budgeting!

ReplyDeleteMost definitely I believe the kids at least have to know that money doesn't grow on trees. I remember when my daughter was little, and she'd say "Just write a check". :)
...I must still have money...I still have checks!
ReplyDeleteJust kidding...money matters are important and I think it's equally important to pray about some of the ways we spend it...I've personally tried to return to the basics for more reasons than money, and I've been pleasantly surprised what things are no longer so important to me anymore.
